General
- Hateful Conduct and Harassment
-
Be advised: We adhere to the Twitch Community Guidelines.
Burke Black has a zero tolerance policy to any conduct that makes a participant feel unsafe, unwelcome, or targeted. This includes, but is not limited to; derogatory comments based on race, sex, gender identity, faith, ancestry, and participation in other communities.
Burke Black also maintains a zero tolerance policy to any sexual harassment within our community, regardless of where it occurs. This includes, but is not limited to; in-game communication, Discord, Twitch chat, social media, and other communication applications.
In any instance where conduct breaches our guidelines, we reserve the right to take any action deemed necessary including, but not limited to, temporary or permanent bans from any game server/s, removal of the offending person/s from all Burke Black communities and reporting of content, as appropriate.
In all instances, the administrative team and streamers of Burke Black maintain executive authority in all decisions. All instances are dealt with on a case-by-case basis - this means that the first action taken may be an immediate ban, depending on the severity of the offence.
Friendly Banter & "Trash Talking"
We intend for this community to be an inclusive place where people can participate the way they choose, in a manner they consent to. While your playstyle may include bantering and comments made in jest, some people may not enjoy this with those that they do not have a previously established relationship with.
Be respectful of others in regards to this; if you are asked to stop behavior that is unwanted - stop and move on. Failure to do so may be considered harassment and will be dealt with accordingly.
- Griefing
-
Any activity that is done with the explicit purpose of disrupting, impeding, or otherwise negatively impacting the play experience of another player, or players, commonly known as "Griefing", will be considered an act of harassment and dealt with under those provisions. (See "Hateful Conduct and Harassment").
- Cheating or Exploiting
-
The use of any mechanic, system, tool, or program (whether native to the game or external), that applies an unfair advantage to the player/s, is prohibited across all "The Late Shift" (TLS) servers. This includes in-game mechanics that disrupt the intended flow of role-play (RP) scenarios.
Example: If you are 'jailed', you must not use /unstuck commands, or similar commands, to remove yourself in a way that does not align with the intended role-play scenario.
If you are suspected of engaging in cheats or exploits, your access to the server/s may be revoked temporarily while an investigation is conducted.
Note: If you become aware of a glitch, cheat, or exploit, please notify The Late Shift administrative staff by contacting our support bot, "Mod Mail", in the Discord.
- Player Reports
-
If you believe that a player, or players, have breached our rules, please submit a report with any supporting evidence to our support bot, "Mod Mail", in the Discord.
Be advised: Do NOT directly message any member of the staff or The Late Shift with queries, concerns, conflicts, complaints, or reports, unless given explicit permission to do so.
- Content Restrictions
-
While our content and servers are considered "mature", there are certain categories of content that will not be permitted for ANY reason. We do permit mild violence, non-sexual nudity, and mild sexual humor.
Be advised: We adhere to, and comply with, the Twitch Terms of Service (ToS) and the Twitch Community Guidelines. Any content that conflicts with either of these is prohibited.
Banned Topics:Any references or role-play (RP) scenarios to the following topics, in any format, are not permitted on any "The Late Shift" (TLS) servers:
- Torture
- Suicide and/or self-harm
- Child abuse, exploitation, and/or sexualisation
- Rape, sexual assault or violence, sex trafficking
- Human trafficking, slavery, or similar topics
- Erotic acts, sexual nudity, and other sexual-oriented content.
Be advised: This list is not exhaustive and is subject to change at any time.
Be advised: The Late Shift administrative staff reserve the right to intervene, veto, or otherwise immediately halt any role-play (RP) scenario or content they believe breaches, or may breach, the Twitch Terms of Service (ToS), the Twitch Community Guidelines, and/or The Late Shift Guidelines.
- Game Session Limits
-
Your health and safety is important to us. For this reason, we strongly encourage regular breaks in play.
Currently, we will enforce that for any twenty-four (24) hour period (real-time), you are logged in to the server for no longer than twelve (12) hours (real-time) in TOTAL. How we monitor and report on this will vary from game to game, depending on a number of factors.
The Late Shift administrative staff reserve the right to place limitations on server availability if there is a legitimate concern for your health and safety.
Be advised: These suggestions are general advice ONLY. We are NOT medical professionals, and you should consult with your doctor, or other qualified persons, if you have specific concerns or requirements.
- Powergaming
-
The use of any tool, mechanic, knowledge, or concept to provide an unreasonable or unfair advantage to a specific person or persons, commonly known as "Powergaming", is prohibited on "The Late Shift" (TLS) servers.
Those found to be engaged in Powergaming will face appropriate action including, but not limited to, removal or reversal of any advantage gained, temporary or permanent removal from the server, or banned from "The Late Shift" (TLS) community.
Learn more about Powergaming.
- Multi-boxing
-
Multi-boxing is the act of running multiple separate characters concurrently within a game. Usually achieved either by running separate instances of the game on one machine, or multiple machines used to run multiple characters.
Multi-boxing is prohibited across all "The Late Shift" (TLS) servers, with a zero tolerance policy. Violators of this rule will be banned across all servers for an indefinite period.
- Conflicts or Complaints
-
If you have a personal issue, unrelated to in-character role-play, with another server participant, we encourage you to seek to find a resolution between the player/s concerned.
If this is not an option, please contact our support bot, "Mod Mail", via the Discord, and a staff member will seek to help mediate and resolve the issue.
Remember: This is a video game; conflict between your in-game characters is not necessarily an attack on you as a person outside of the game.
Be advised: Do NOT directly message any member of the staff or The Late Shift with queries, concerns, conflicts, complaints, or reports, unless given explicit permission to do so.
- Streamer Stalking
-
We understand that the opportunity to play games alongside content creators can be exciting, however, we want to ensure fair enjoyment for everyone - that includes our content creators. For this reason, we ask that you DO NOT prioritise, needlessly follow, or "stalk", content creators.
Be advised: This doesn’t mean that you can’t engage with them, but don’t look to only interact with them - treat them as you would any other server participant.
Conduct that is in breach of this rule will result in corrective action, which may include, but is not limited to, forced teleport away from the creator/s, temporary or permanent removal from the server, or banned from "The Late Shift" (TLS) community.
As with any other player, the comfort and safety of our content creators is taken seriously, and we will take their guidance on whether or not your conduct is negatively affecting their experience.
- Respect the Staff

- Applications
-
Be advised: This rule only applies to "The Late Shift" (TLS) hosted servers, or events, that have applications as a requirement.
Administrative staff reserve the right to approve, or decline, any application without cause, or notice to you.
All players wishing to play on "The Late Shift" (TLS) hosted servers, or events, MUST apply (where there is a relevant application). This includes if you have been "whitelisted", or informally approved in private conversations.
Bear in mind, we often receive a large number of applications to join these servers and events, and due to the limitations of the game and/or server, there may be a hard cap on the number of applications that can be approved.
However, we do maintain applications for the duration of the server, or event, so even if you are not initially approved, you may receive approval later on in the event or life of the server.
Be advised: When your application is under review, do NOT directly message any member of staff, or our support bot, "Mod Mail", in the Discord, for status requests on your application. Doing so may result in your application being declined.
Note: If you have a question, concern, or need assistance, please contact our support bot, "Mod Mail", in the Discord, and a member of staff will assist you.
- Queries or Concerns
-
The best way to receive support from our team is to use the support bot, "Mod Mail", in the Discord. As multiple people receive your message through this bot, it is likely you will receive a faster response than directly messaging a staff member.
To open a conversation, simply right-click the "TLS Mod Mail" user in Discord and select "Message", from the drop-down list, then send your message as you would to any other person. Your message will be responded to in due course.
Be advised: Do NOT directly message any member of the staff or The Late Shift with queries, concerns, conflicts, complaints, or reports, unless given explicit permission to do so.
Powergaming
-
The use of any tool, mechanic, knowledge, or concept to provide an unreasonable or unfair advantage to a specific person or persons, commonly known as "Powergaming", is prohibited on "The Late Shift" (TLS) servers.
Metagaming is considered a form of Powergaming, in that it provides you an unfair advantage over other characters. (See "Metagaming").
Some other common examples of Powergaming are:
- Unrealistic/Overpowered Characters
-
Your character must not be, or be perceived to be, unreasonably overpowered or unrealistic compared to the average character.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Immortal or god-like characters.
- Superhuman traits or abilities.
- Attempting to use psychic powers (or similar) to perceive events you could not otherwise know about.
- Manipulating character design or attributes to achieve the ideal gameplay advantage (commonly known as "min-maxing").
- Resetting character traits repeatedly to suit your current needs and goals.
- Manipulation of a "buff" system, or similar, to gain an unreasonable advantage.
- Unreasonably engaging in role-play (RP) without fear in the face of clear and present danger. (See the "New Life Rule").
- Claiming omniscience or being "all-knowing" to explain knowledge your character could not otherwise know.
- Forced RP
-
Players must not engage in a role-play (RP) scenario that forces other characters into a situation without the opportunity to react or have choice.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Taking a "sleeping" character hostage or otherwise impeding them without permission.
- Claiming a relation or link to another character without permission.
- Forcing a permanent state onto another character without permission (death, disfigurement, etc).
- In-Game Mechanics
-
The availability of in-game mechanics should never be used as a reason to ignore a valid role-play (RP) scenario.\
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Forcing a character death to avoid role-play (RP).
- Using in-game build/demolish mechanics to avoid locks or other impassable structures.
- Skill checks to avoid conversation in finding out skills or traits.
The general rule is: "If you couldn’t do it in your real life, should your character be doing it?"
Remember: Your character believes that they only have one life and you should act accordingly (per the New Life Rule).
Metagaming
-
The use of information that you as a player knows, but that your character does not, to provide an unreasonable or unfair advantage to a specific person or persons, commonly known as "Metagaming", is prohibited on "The Late Shift" (TLS) servers.
Metagaming is also considered a form of Powergaming, in that it provides you an unfair advantage over other characters. (See "Powergaming").
Some other common example of Metagaming are:
- Nameplates
-
Most games have a visual representation of a character's name overhead. If possible, we encourage you to turn this off.
If this is not an option, treat it as if you cannot see it - you don’t walk past someone on the street and see their name hovering above their head, you have to talk to them!
- Game Mechanics
-
Similar to nameplates, games have a representation of when characters enter or leave the game server, maps, etc. If it doesn’t make sense for your character to have this information, again, treat it as if it does not exist.
- External Information
-
As mentioned, you should not rely on knowledge as a player that your character does not have knowledge of. This is especially important when it comes to in-game mechanics like skills, attributes, spawn locations, resources etc.
This also applies to information obtained from communication with other players or sources like livestreams of/from other players. If you have played multiple characters in a single server, you must treat each character as having separate knowledge.
- Stream Sniping
-
As a player, you must not use the content of another player’s livestream, or recorded content, to gain knowledge your character does not know or an unfair advantage in a role-play (RP) event or scenario.
If you are reported to be stream sniping, The Late Shift staff will investigate these claims and act accordingly. Since it’s very difficult to prove or disprove intent with a stream open, it is recommended you do not have the stream open of anyone you are likely to engage with on the server you are participating in.
New Life Rule
-
For role-play (RP) servers, you may be permitted to return to the game after a character "dies", known as the New Life Rule (NLR). When NLR is in effect, in an active RP scenario, your character does not permanently die, however:
- Memory Retention
-
Upon your "death", your character has no memory of the moments leading up to or the details of your "death" and must not act on the knowledge as if they do.
- Death
-
Upon the "death" of your character, you must not return to the location of your "death" for at least fifteen (15) minutes.
Should you die, due to circumstances out of your control or outside of a role-play (RP) scenario (lag spikes, game error, human error, etc.), you can return to your character’s body and reclaim any dropped items or "loot".
- Permadeath
-
You, as the player, have the option to make your character's death permanent (commonly known as "Perma"-ing a character). Should you choose to do this, your character and any possessions associated with them including, but not limited to, buildings, businesses, creatures, knowledge, items or "loot", etc. are immediately forfeit.
Only the player of a character can make a death permanent; no other player can force a character death to be a permanent scenario.
Be advised: Due to limitations, certain games will only allow the creation of one character per server. Where this is a limitation, you will be unable to "perma" your character. We will endeavour to advise you on server launch if this is the case.
- Loot
-
Any items or "loot" dropped on the death of your character is forfeit and you must not return to collect it.
The exception to this, is if you are participating in a server that has Player vs Environment (PvE) elements of gameplay and you die alone, with no other characters within sight of your death. If this is the case, you may return to your character’s body and reclaim any dropped items or "loot".
As a character, if you come across the dropped items, or "loot", of a killed character that you are not engaged in an active role-play (RP) scenario with and your character did not witness the death of, you MUST NOT pick up the items; This may be an exempted death (PvE death that occurred solo) and their items should NOT be considered forfeit.
Roleplay
- Stay in Character
-
On our servers, where the primary purpose is role-play (RP), ensure that your character is aligned with the traits and personality that you set out, whether as part of initial creation or through events that occur in the server.
While actively participating in the server, you should seek to minimise instances of out-of-character (OOC) behavior or conversation.
- Value of Life
-
On servers and events, where your character faces the possible consequence of death, you should act with the appropriate fear of mortality - you have one life and should make decisions and act accordingly.
- Metagaming
-
While participating in role-play (RP) servers, you should only act upon knowledge that your character has obtained realistically and legitimately through the events and actions of your character, and should not rely on information known by you out-of-character (OOC).
This includes, but is not limited to, locations of people, items or resources, and the motivations or actions taken by other players.
If your character didn’t see it, or hear it, act as though you don’t have the awareness.
Learn more about Metagaming.
- New Life Rule (NLR)
-

- You must not return to the location of your "death" for at least fifteen (15) minutes.
- Any items or "loot" dropped is forfeit and you must not return to collect it.
- Your character has no memory of the moments leading to your death and must not act on this knowledge. (See "Metagaming").
The exception to this, is if you are participating in a server that has Player vs Environment (PvE) elements of gameplay and you die alone, with no other characters within sight of your death. If this is the case, you may return to your character’s body and reclaim any dropped items or "loot".

- Seperate the Character and the Player
-
When participating in role-play (RP) servers and events, it’s important that you can clearly draw a line between yourself as a Player, that is you as a real-life person, and yourself as a Character, your in-game representation.
Conversations, disagreements, and conflicts, between Characters, should not result in ill feelings towards Players. If you find yourself unable to separate the two, we encourage you to take a break until you feel comfortable returning.
If your conduct as a Player becomes disruptive or negatively impacts other Players, due to an inability to separate yourself from your Character, staff may be forced to take action to temporarily or permanently remove you from the server or event.
Remember: You play your Character, but YOU are NOT your Character. What happens in game is not a comment or attack on you as a Player in reality.
Characters
-
Before joining a role-play (RP) server, you will be asked to create your Character. Your character descriptions do not need to be in-depth, but you should at least be able to talk to your character’s name, age, and appearance.
Ideally, you should also have a backstory for your character that explains their motivations, family situation, education level, and their personality traits.
Note: As our servers and content are considered "mature", all characters must be at least aged eighteen (18) years or older. We will not accept any characters under this age for any reason.
- Character Design
-
As much as possible, your character should match in appearance to your character description. If you are creating a character with unexpected features or proportions, you must be able to reasonably justify it.
- Character Names
-
- Must follow either;
- First Name/ Last Name format.
- Be a mononym (single name only).
- Must be realistic and inoffensive.
- Do NOT use a name that cannot be reasonably pronounced in the English language.
- Do NOT use words or names from other languages that would be considered a curse, slur, or derogatory term in any translation.
- Must not violate the Twitch Community Guidelines.
- Must not be Twitch username.
- Should not contain any non-alphanumeric characters (with the exception of a hyphen -).
- Cannot be the same as or similar to a notable person, player, or character. (See "Notable People, Players, or Characters").
Be advised: The Late Shift administrative staff retain ultimate discretion on the acceptability of a name. This includes approving a name that is otherwise in breach of these rules, or denying a name that doesn’t clearly breach the rules.
- Must follow either;
- Notable People, Players, or Characters
-
You must not attempt to role-play (RP) as a notable person, player, or character that already exists. You may model your character, in part, after them, but must not be them, or use their exact name. This includes, but is not limited to, celebrities or other famous/notable real-life people, content creators, or notable characters from other servers/events.
Be advised: The Late Shift administrative staff retain ultimate discretion on the acceptability of a name. This includes approving a name that is otherwise in breach of these rules, or denying a name that doesn’t clearly breach the rules.
- Display Names
-
When possible, you must align your character display name to the name included in your application. This includes in The Late Shift Community Discord, on Steam, Epic, or any other relevant game launcher (if required), so that your character is easily identifiable in the server/event world.
You may opt for a preferred name (such as a nickname or title), but please ensure you have included this name in your application and you can justify the relation to your character.
Example: Lazarus West, preferred name Mr. West.Example: Lilith Leif, preferred name Lily Leif.Be advised: The Late Shift administrative staff reserve the right to remove, modify, or otherwise edit display names at their discretion.
Communication
- VOIP
-
Servers and events run by "The Late Shift" (TLS) primarily use "Voice over IP (VOIP)". For this reason, we ask that if you participate in the servers, you use a good quality microphone and headset to communicate verbally.
Prior to engaging in communication, please test your microphone volume and quality to ensure you can be heard clearly, without negatively impacting the experience of other players.
- Local Chat/In-Game Text Chat
-
A server’s local or in-game text chat function may be used for written emotes that you cannot express via your character. It may also be used to communicate emergency issues out-of-character (OOC).
- Mic Spam
-
Please do NOT broadcast music or soundboard items over the in-game VOIP system, unless there is a justifiable reason (role-play or otherwise) to do so. Usage of this should not be excessive.
For any music or sound effects, consider the copyright of the source as multiple people participating in the server are likely to be livestreaming their time on the server.
- Language
-
We are a predominantly English-speaking community. For this reason, we ask that your communication, both written and verbal, be in English to ensure the clarity of your communication and that all interactions can be moderated, if necessary.
English does not need to be your first language and you do not need to be fluent, but we ask that you have enough command of the language to easily understand and be understood by others.
- External Communication Servies
-
Communications outside of the game including, but not limited to, Discord, Guilded, Skype, TeamSpeak, or In Real Life (IRL) communications, must NOT be used to advance or progress any scenarios related to role-play (RP) content.
Note: Due to game/server limitations or issues, or for certain RP scenarios, there may be exceptions to this rule from time to time. The Late Shift administrative staff will advise you when this is the case.
Eco
- Character Display Name
-
Due to the limitations of Eco, players must change their Steam profile name to their desired character name, BEFORE they launch Eco.
If you fail to do so, your character will retain the display name of your current Steam profile name, and CANNOT be changed later.
- Pollution
-
Pollution in Eco has a lasting effect on the world and should be taken into consideration when dealing with tailings, garbage, sewage, and other pollution-causing blocks.
As such, we ask that you do NOT unnecessarily dump tailings all around the world - everything has a place, even tailings.
Do NOT dump more than forty (40) tailings in a single spot, unless you have submitted a request and received permission from The Late Shift administrative staff.
Driving vehicles into the water full of tailings, garbage, sewage, or other pollution-causing blocks, and then unloading them, is considered Powergaming and will not be tolerated. (See "Powergaming").
Remember: Another player will have to clean up the mess you make and it is, in no way, fun for the other party to do so for hours on end.
- Skills & Professions
-
Unlike last season, there will be no restrictions on skills and professions at this time.
Note: If you have a question, concern, or need assistance, please contact our support bot, "Mod Mail", in the Discord, and a member of staff will assist you.
